Cosmetics Industry in 1999
 
Introduction:
The sanitary and cosmetics products, which come under the category of chemical products consist of tooth paste, whiteners or bleaching liquid, diversified types of cleansers and detergents including powders, hand and dish liquids, oven cleaners, soap bars and tablets as well as cosmetics including aux de colon and lotions etc, shampoos and softeners.
Such products are attached great significance due to the vital role they play in people's sanitation and health. Actually the higher the sanitation expenses the less medication costs. In other words, the more you allocate to purchase of sanitary items the less money you would need to spend on health care, medications and treatment of illnesses.
Production Volume:
The production volume of such items is not known. The available figures are neither comprehensive nor complete, as factories fail to publish any segregated or independent data. This essay will merely try to render a general view of the status of this industry in 1999 in Iran only for some items namely toothpaste, whiteners, various detergents, shampoos and soaps.
 
I. Production:
1- Shampoo: Total production volume of shampoo by 195 production units reached nearly 44,000 tons in 1999, indicating 1.3% decline compared to a year earlier.
2- Whitener: Total production volume of whitener by 93 production units surpassed 66,000 tons in 1999, indicating 8.7% growth compared to a year earlier.
3- Soap: Total production volume of soap bars type "A" by 222 production units surpassed 42,000 tons in 1999, indicating 2.6% drop compared to a year earlier. And total production volume of liquid hand soap by 24 units reached 8,433 tons, indicating 61.7% increase compared to a year earlier.
4- Liquid dish soap: Total production volume of such soap reached 189,000, indicating 13% growth compared to a year earlier.
 
5- Toothpaste: The production volume of toothpaste by 22 units surpassed 5,000 tons in 1999, indicating 12% growth compared to a year earlier.
6- Powder detergents: The major manufacturers were Paxan, Tully Press, Pakvash, Paknam, Behdad and Pars (P.I.P.). Their total production volume reached 290,000 tons, 244,000 tons of which were normal powder detergent and the rest washing machine powder. The former indicated only 1% and the latter 8% boost compared to a year earlier. Tully Press's share of the total production volume of such powder in the country being 27.5% put it on top of the list while Pars (PIP) was at the bottom with only 6% share.
