Iran Fisheries
 
 

A collection of activities aimed at fishing, proliferation and reproduction of fishes and other aquatic creatures is, in Iran, referred to as Fisheries. Iran Fisheries Co. (Shilat), affiliated to Ministry of Agricultural Jihad, being fully in charge of such operations has monopolized this sector.

 

 

 

 

Fishing Geography

Geographically all the fisheries and catches are divided into three sections: The Caspian Sea, Waters in the south and Domestic Waters.

1- Caspian Sea waters:
The provinces sharing this region consist of Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan Provinces. The southern section of the Caspian Sea with rivers or streams pouring into them as well as swamps are home to various marine life creatures.

2- Waters in the south:
The Iranian territory inside the Persian Gulf and the Oman Sea as well as Arvand Rood river and international waters form such waters. The provinces sharing this region consist of Khuzestan, Bushehr, Hormozgan and Sistano-Baluchestan.

3- Domestic waters:
Many forms of aquatic life inhabit ponds, inclusive of natural and artificial lakes, small and large dams, water channels, as well as swamps, rivers, streams, etc make up the domestic waters. Such places are used for reproduction of fishes and other water creatures. Such creatures are divided into two types according to their production aquatic characteristics: Inhabitants of cold waters and those in warm waters. Generally speaking domestic waters are inhabitant of diversified fishes.

Diversification of reproduced fishes:
Reproducing or catching fishes is differentiated according to diversification of climate:
Estrogen (producer of caviar), anchovy, and boned fishes such as salmon, pike, carp, etc are caught in the Caspian Sea, which is located in the north of the country. In addition to shrimp, ocean fishes such as tuna, cod, sardine, sole, whiting, skate, mullet, roach, herring, mackerel, haddock, carp, plaice and shark are caught in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman, located in the south. A few various forms of aquatic life inhabit ponds, referred to as domestic waters, are home to artificially reproduced shrimp, trout, etc.

Man Power

There are two groups of fishers:
A- Fishers who are member of Fishing Cooperatives.
B- Those, who catch fishes independently.

I- In the southern region:
a- Those who are members of Fishing Cooperatives, and those who are non-member but hold a fishing permit and I.D. card (such as the crew on any kind of fishing boat). They earn their livings in two ways: They are paid either a fixed salary or a commission.
b- Mashta owners
c- Large net owners and trawlers

II- The Caspian region:
a- Members of Anchovy Fishing Cooperatives using a barge, raft or a trawler for fishing.
b- Members of Anchovy Fishing Cooperatives who haul their net toward the shore by using a tractor or hauler.
c- Government employees especially licensed to catch estrogen for production of caviar, which is mostly exported.

III- Domestic waters:
Those who are merely busy reproducing fishes inside ponds, dam lakes, streams, etc. They include:
a- Cold water fishes
b- Warm water fishes
c- Shrimps
