Kashan -the House of Boroujerdis

Kashan, one of the most beautiful Iranian cities, is an oasis town on the Qom-Kerman road running along the western edge of the Great Iranian Desert. Kashan's arid climatic conditions- exhaustive heat of the day and severe desert chill of the night- calls for special architectural techniques in constructions.

In the architectural designing of the houses, special techniques for controlling and deflection of sunlight and minimizing the severe impacts of seasonal climatic variations have been effected thus giving a special characteristic to these buildings. The house of Boroujerdi, belonging to a trading family who migrated to Kashan, was built over a hundred years ago. The construction date can still be seen on the covered inscription of the building, completion of which took 18 years of work by tens of laborers, architects and master painters. Since exceptional attention has been paid to all minute architectural details demanded by the geographical and climatic conditions of the area, the house has attracted considerable attention of architects and recognition from Iranian and foreign scientific and technical teams.

The dome and ceilings of the house as well as the mud and straw plaster brickwork have a special beauty and attraction. The beautiful plasterwork, the paint-decorated arches and pictures of Iranian princes on the walls, besides giving the house a modern and European look, have served to convert it into a masterpiece of art.

This old house has a pond, cellar, portico, and nicely designed baad-girs (wind towers) with winding corridors for air circulation. The windows have been fitted with tinted glasses to control the radiation of sunlight into the house. The delicate and thin layer of mud and straw plaster and the reddish coloring bestow an unforgettable bliss and tranquility upon the onlookers.
